The SmartRim proximity sensor uses high-frequency ultrasonic sound waves to locate curbs or obstacles. Using an internal temperature sensor (to compensate for the speed of sound in air of different temperature) and calibration parameters, SmartRim can gauge the distance between the car and the curb.
